Spring is here, and that means it’s time to shake off the winter chill and get your pool ready for a season of fun in the sun. A proper opening ensures your pool is safe, clean, and ready for swimming. Follow this step-by-step checklist to make your pool opening a breeze.
1. Remove the Pool Cover
Start by clearing off any debris, leaves, or standing water from your pool cover. Once it’s clean, carefully remove the cover and let it dry completely before storing it. A properly stored cover will last longer and be easier to use next season.
2. Inspect and Reconnect Equipment
Reconnect all the equipment that was winterized, including:
Pool pump
Filter system
Heater (if applicable)
Skimmer baskets
Return jets
Check for any signs of wear or damage and replace parts as needed.
3. Refill and Balance the Water
If your water level dropped over the winter, top it off to the appropriate level. Then, test and balance the following:
pH: 7.2–7.6
Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
Chlorine: 1–3 ppm
Calcium Hardness: 200–400 ppm
Proper water chemistry helps prevent algae growth and keeps your pool clear and safe.
4. Shock the Pool
After months of inactivity, your pool needs a boost. Use a chlorine shock treatment to eliminate bacteria, algae, and contaminants. Allow the water to circulate for at least 24 hours before swimming.
5. Clean and Vacuum
Skim the surface, brush the walls, and vacuum the pool to remove any debris that settled over the winter. This step keeps your pool looking great and helps prevent future buildup.
6. Consider a Pool Gas Heater for a Longer Season
Even as the temperatures rise, evenings can still be chilly. A gas pool heater helps maintain a comfortable water temperature, letting you enjoy your pool earlier in the spring and later into the fall. It’s the perfect addition for a more year-round pool experience—no need to wait for summer to take a dip!

7. Check Safety Features
Inspect your pool fence, gates, ladders, and handrails to ensure everything is secure and in working order. If you have a pool alarm, test it to make sure it’s functioning properly.
8. Set Up Regular Maintenance
Once your pool is open, stick to a regular cleaning and maintenance schedule to keep it in peak condition. Weekly skimming, brushing, and water testing will go a long way in keeping your pool sparkling all season.
